Free book promotion sites: separate the author fee from the book price
A site that advertises free ebooks may still charge authors. A site that accepts a free application may select only a few titles. An author profile can be free to maintain without giving you a broadcast to the site's readers. These are useful but non-interchangeable options.
Conditions checked: 14 October 2026. The table includes only no-fee routes identifiable on official pages. It does not imply every route offers equivalent reach or guaranteed acceptance. Paid upgrades are deliberately separate; verify current terms before submitting.
Three labels to use in your plan
- No-fee editorial application: you pay nothing to request consideration, but publication is uncertain.
- No-fee basic listing or profile: you submit information or maintain a presence; a paid campaign is a different product.
- Conditional no-cash exchange: there is a reciprocal promotional obligation, even when there is no placement invoice.
1. Compare five real no-fee routes
| Route | Fee and book conditions | What the route provides | Main limitation / source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freebooksy editorial submission | $0 application; book must actually be free | Editorial consideration for a feature | No guaranteed selection or date. Official editorial route |
| Bargain Booksy editorial submission | $0 application; Kindle ebook priced $0.99-$4.99 on this route | Consideration for an editorial feature | Not a reservation; a purchased feature is separate. Editorial conditions |
| Awesome Gang basic submission | No featured upgrade selected; supply book details and a direct purchase link | Basic book submission for approval | Requested date is not assured; $10 featured option is separate. Submission form |
| BookBub Author Profile | $0 for an eligible author; published ebook on a supported retailer and identity verification | A book-and-author presence readers can discover and follow | Not a Featured Deal placement. Official tool overview |
| BookDoggy no-charge exchange | No placement charge if you promote its draw to your own 3,000+ email subscribers | A promotional exchange subject to the usual book conditions | Not for authors without that audience; agreement and scheduling required. Exchange requirements |
BookBub's profile is included as a free discovery presence, not disguised as an email placement. BookDoggy's exchange is included with the audience requirement visible, not presented as universally free advertising.
A real difference between two Bargain Booksy routes
The editorial page specifies $0.99-$4.99. The paid product page describes $0.99-$5. Do not substitute the paid ceiling when preparing a free application. A book at $5.00 should not be assumed eligible for the editorial route; ask the operator if a boundary case matters.
2. Do not confuse these with free author advertising
| Label | What it may actually mean | Your check |
|---|---|---|
| Free-book promotion | The reader pays zero for the book; the author pays for the placement | Inspect the author product, not the reader signup page |
| Free submission | An application is free; an accepted paid product still has a fee | Check what acceptance commits you to |
| Free author account | A login or profile is available without purchasing ads | Distinguish account access from distribution |
| Free to subscribers | The book is included in a subscription, not free to all readers | Use the actual purchase price and eligibility |
For example, Freebooksy also sells placements, and The Fussy Librarian's rate card has separate fees for free-ebook and bargain-ebook products. The word "free" in a newsletter category does not remove its author fee. Compare paid choices in the paid promotion table.
Do not treat a paid service with a temporary coupon as a permanent free tier. Nor should a directory of old submission links count as verified availability. If you cannot identify a current official no-fee route, leave it off the zero-budget schedule.
3. Choose a route that fits your actual starting point
No audience and no promotion budget
Start with a usable book presence and a small number of relevant applications. You cannot offer a 3,000-subscriber exchange with a new list. Do not buy subscribers to meet a threshold or exaggerate your audience. One honest application is more useful than a batch of false submissions that cannot be fulfilled.
A discounted ebook with a fixed end date
Use a route that accepts a paid book at your planned price. Because editorial selection is uncertain, do not build the entire promotion around an unconfirmed application. Have an independent plan for communicating the offer to readers who have chosen to hear from you.
A free ebook
First establish that the free offer will actually be live on the advertised destination. If you are using a Kindle promotion, see the Kindle scheduling guide. Do not assume a "read with subscription" button satisfies a site expecting a zero purchase price.
An existing reader newsletter
A reciprocal placement may be possible, but your readers' attention is a real cost. Assess the other offer for relevance and explain it honestly. Never exchange subscriber files. Publish an appropriate recommendation to your own audience rather than handing its addresses to another operator.
4. Prepare one accurate submission kit
Keep a plain document with verified information so each form takes minutes rather than a new round of rewriting. Then tailor it to the site's requirements. A shared kit is not permission to ignore word limits or send the same vague description everywhere.
- Exact book title, author name and promoted edition.
- A genre-specific synopsis that describes the actual reading experience.
- A short author biography without irrelevant claims or fabricated awards.
- Direct retailer URL and an author website URL when allowed.
- Regular price, offer price, currency, territory and dates.
- A properly sized front-cover image in the required format.
- A contact email you monitor and a record of what you submitted.
Awesome Gang's form, for example, requests a front cover under 200 KB and disallows shortened and affiliate purchase links. It also separates the optional featured listing from the basic submission. Check these fields at the form, not in an old third-party list.
Example offer line: "A closed-door coastal mystery for readers who enjoy an amateur sleuth and small-town secrets. Kindle edition, Amazon US, $0.99 from [start] through [end], [time zone]. Direct link: [edition URL]."
This is sample copy, not a claim about a real book. Replace every bracketed field. If the book is a practical guide, lead with the audience and problem it addresses instead of borrowing a fiction hook.
5. Treat applications as uncertain until confirmed
Track the route, submission date, requested date, price window and response. Use separate statuses such as prepared, submitted, selected, declined and delivered. Do not mark an editorial application as booked just because the form displayed a success message.
Submit ahead of the event and leave room for uncertainty. No universal lead time applies across this table. If a route offers no confirmed date, it should not be responsible for your only launch-day exposure.
- Check the direct book link before each submission.
- Record the operator's date and price-window instructions.
- Verify the live offer when a placement is confirmed.
- Report a material price or edition change promptly.
- Do not keep resubmitting a rejected title against the service's rules.
If no response arrives, follow only the operator's stated follow-up process. Do not message readers or staff repeatedly to force attention. Move on to another eligible route and keep the launch plan usable without that selection.
6. Count the time as well as the cash
A $0 invoice does not make an hour of submission work free. Set a time budget and compare the outcomes: accepted listing, relevant visits, voluntary subscriptions or plausible incremental purchases. A visible listing confirms publication, not that a particular number of readers saw it.
Record paid sales separately from free downloads. Use available aggregate retailer reports and any allowed link reporting. Retailer activity does not necessarily identify which free listing caused it, especially when several run together.
When to stop using a route
Stop when the submission is no longer maintained, the book cannot meet its conditions, repeated use produces no useful evidence, or the time would be better spent improving the book page and your own audience. Do not compensate for poor fit by adding more directories.
7. Turn a small free plan into a durable reader presence
Choose one persistent presence and two suitable applications. Put a time limit on the process, keep dates accurate and measure what actually happened. Build your author platform alongside these placements so every campaign does not begin from zero.
If readers choose to join your newsletter, use the author email guide for a clear signup and welcome sequence. Promotion is an introduction, not consent to add every visitor or purchaser to a mailing list.
