Book promotion sites compared: six concrete options

A promotion site's name is not a product specification. A curated deal email, an editorial application, a paid genre feature and an author profile buy or provide different things. Start by matching the book's actual offer to the placement you can book.

Conditions checked: 14 October 2026. Prices below are published USD examples for named products, not universal quotes. They exclude optional extras and any applicable checkout charges. Confirm the live rate, date and terms before paying. These are comparisons of published conditions, not results from campaigns we ran.

The lowest fee is not necessarily the lowest acquisition cost. Conversely, a large mailing list does not establish profitable sales. Use the table to exclude unsuitable products before comparing budgets.

1. What this comparison can and cannot tell you

Each row uses the operator's own author, pricing or submission page. We compare the advertised product, required offer and published restrictions. A provider's testimonial, subscriber count or average is not treated as a forecast for your book.

Why there is no universal number-one site

A free first-in-series novel and a full-price standalone manual have different economics and reader intent. Without a book, target territory and measurable objective, ranking the same six services from best to worst would suggest evidence we do not have.

What was not independently tested

We did not audit subscriber lists, buy these placements or measure their sales conversion for this comparison. Calendar availability, checkout totals and support responses remain checks for the actual booking. Published rates can remain on a page after the operator's displayed rate-card update date; they are not locked quotes.

Freebooksy and Bargain Booksy belong to the same Written Word Media family. Buying both does not establish two completely separate audiences. Ask about overlap before paying for a stack. See the operator's newsletter overview.

2. Shortlist by the job you need done

A free ebook discovery campaign

Compare a free-book product with another free-book product, not with an ad for a paid ebook. Decide what a useful outcome would be after the giveaway: voluntary reader subscriptions, later series purchases or evidence that the cover and premise attract suitable readers. Free downloads themselves produce no paid-sale margin.

A discounted paid ebook

Compare genre fit, the permitted sale price and the effective royalty during the discount. A cheap placement can still be expensive if your margin is small. Your offer must also be meaningful to a reader; a temporarily reduced price is not enough when the cover and description promise the wrong genre.

A new release or a book without reviews

Do not submit to a product with a review minimum you cannot meet. Nor should you obtain artificial reviews to pass a gate. Check a service's actual new-release product or a route whose current terms permit your book. Separate launch publicity from a deal listing: they need different copy, timing and evidence.

Our Kindle comparison maps products to Amazon offers. For no-fee applications rather than paid bookings, use the free promotion table.

3. Run the eligibility checks before reserving dates

  • Identify the exact format, ASIN or retailer edition being promoted.
  • Match the genre to the book's reading experience, not the cheapest available list.
  • Check territorial availability and the currency readers will see.
  • Record required price, prior-price restrictions and the complete offer window.
  • Check length, content, cover and review requirements for that product.
  • Confirm the book can legally be distributed through every submitted destination.

BookBub's published minimums distinguish formats: for example, novels generally need 150 pages, nonfiction 100 and cookbooks 70. It also restricts recent lower prices and repeat features. A short activity book should not be submitted as a full-length novel simply to fit a form. Use the linked requirements, including the category-specific exceptions.

BookSends may reject an otherwise eligible submission or offer another date. Its expanded guidelines also explain that a wrong sale price can prevent the feature without creating a right to a reschedule or refund. Treat acceptance and offer readiness as separate milestones.

4. Decide what you can afford before choosing the site

Use author earnings, not the reader's purchase price, when calculating a paid-sale break-even point. Subtract the promotion's incremental costs from incremental royalties. Existing sales that would likely have happened anyway are not automatically campaign results.

Planning formula: promotion fee divided by estimated net royalty per incremental sale, rounded up, gives the number of additional sales needed to cover that fee alone.

Illustrative example, not a performance claim: a $70 placement and an assumed $0.35 net royalty require 200 incremental sales to cover the placement. At an assumed $2.00 royalty, the same fee requires 35. Neither calculation predicts that the placement will deliver those sales.

For a free-book campaign, this formula cannot use the free download as a paid sale. If you expect later series revenue, define an observation period and use actual later royalties conservatively. Do not assign every subsequent sale to the promotion or assume a fixed read-through rate.

Set a loss limit

Choose an amount you can afford to lose while learning. Reserve money for a failed first test, support time and any justified repeat. A bundle discount is not a reason to buy several poorly matched placements. An author with no baseline should usually learn from a small, legible experiment before building a large stack.

5. Ask these questions before payment

"For [title and edition], I want the [named product] in [genre] on [date]. The offer is [price] in [territory], active from [start and zone] to [end and zone]. Please confirm the total fee, included placements, eligibility, cancellation deadline and the reporting supplied. What happens if the retailer price is wrong?"

Save the answer and the submitted details. Check that a requested date became an accepted date, and that payment confirmed the intended product. Do not infer that a submission acknowledgement is a reservation.

Written Word Media's published cancellation terms distinguish cancellation at least three business days ahead from the final window, and exclude refunds for an incorrect price on promotion morning. Follow the terms attached to your purchase rather than relying on a general expectation that a failed campaign is refundable.

6. Evaluate the placement without inventing attribution

Keep a daily record for the title before, during and after the offer. Include paid orders, refunds, free downloads, royalties, relevant subscription-reading metrics and other marketing activity. Use provider click reporting when supplied, but do not equate clicks with purchases.

Evidence that supports a repeat decision
MeasureUseful questionLimitation
Placement deliveredDid the named product run on the agreed date?Delivery is not a sales guarantee
Retailer royaltiesDid incremental earnings plausibly cover the spend?Overlapping activity weakens attribution
Relevant reader responseDid suitable readers voluntarily engage further?Downloads and follows are not purchases
Operational effortWas the booking and offer manageable to repeat?Low cash cost can hide substantial work

Inspect discrepancies before buying again: wrong edition, wrong territory, expired price, weak genre match or overlapping promotion. A temporary ranking change alone does not demonstrate profitability.

7. Leave with a shortlist, not a shopping list

Pick two eligible products, record their exact conditions and select one controlled first test. Keep a fallback date or lower-cost route. Integrate it with your marketing checklist; use the newsletter campaign guide for booking and audience questions in more detail.

If your primary need is independent early reading rather than deal traffic, use the ARC-reader guide. A promotion placement is not a purchase of reviews, and none of the comparisons here should be read as a promise of them.

Which book promotion site is best?

There is no universal winner. Shortlist by your genre, offer, territory, eligibility and budget. This comparison checks published products and conditions; it does not rank services by independently tested conversion or guaranteed sales.

How much do book promotion sites charge?

Fees vary by service, category, offer and region. The table gives specific published examples, not universal quotes. Confirm the exact product and checkout total, including optional extras, before booking.

Does paying guarantee acceptance or sales?

Not necessarily. Some placements require editorial approval, and even a confirmed placement does not guarantee purchases, profit or reviews. Save the actual deliverables and acceptance confirmation.

Can I promote a book without reviews?

Check the product rather than assuming one policy covers every service. BookSends publishes a minimum of five reviews for its main deal submission. Do not manufacture reviews to satisfy a gate; choose an eligible route.

Is a free-ebook promotion free for the author?

Usually these are two separate questions. The ebook may cost readers nothing while a newsletter charges an author placement fee. Free editorial applications and paid features must be compared separately.

How do I decide whether a promotion paid for itself?

Compare plausible incremental royalties with the placement fee and other incremental costs. Use a baseline and record overlapping marketing. Free downloads, clicks and temporary ranking changes do not establish profit.
