Can you get book reviews before launch?
You can obtain early reading feedback and, where a destination allows it, independent pre-publication reviews. You cannot promise that those opinions will appear as Amazon customer reviews before a new edition is released. Prepare the readers and the book early, then check the actual review destination and publication status.
Start by defining the outcome you mean. Private notes, a Goodreads review, an editorial assessment and an Amazon customer review are different records. They have different rules and do not automatically transfer between platforms.
| Outcome | Possible pre-launch use | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Private reader feedback | Understand the reading experience or a specific problem | Not a public review and not automatic permission to quote |
| Pre-publication review on a reading platform | Share an independent experience where current rules permit | The reader must follow that platform's process |
| Editorial assessment or blurb | Provide a clearly identified professional assessment or endorsement | Not an ordinary customer review; commercial relationships may need disclosure |
| Amazon customer review | Plan around the actual eligible edition and reader account | A preorder page is not proof that a review can be submitted or published |
If a campaign provider advertises "reviews before launch," ask which of these outcomes it means and what it actually delivers. Do not treat an unspecific promise as an Amazon guarantee.
1. Understand the Amazon release workflow
An ebook preorder page is not a review guarantee
KDP's ebook preorder workflow can make a buying page available before release. Do not infer from that page that every account can post a customer review of the unreleased edition. Check the actual listing and current account-specific review options rather than promising a date.
For a new edition, a practical plan is to allow early reading while treating an Amazon-facing review update as conditional on release and the review function being available. This is a planning choice, not a claim that every Amazon book has the same interface or eligibility.
A scheduled print release is a different workflow
Under KDP's scheduled print release, the detail page remains hidden until release. Do not send readers a promised public review link to a page that is not yet available.
If another edition is already published
Be precise: it is an already released edition, not evidence that the unreleased format accepts reviews. Reviews and edition linking are controlled by Amazon. Do not promise that a review will transfer, publish another format merely to create a review workaround or ask readers to misrepresent what they read.
Use the publishing timelines to plan around listing changes and linking delays. Those estimates are not a launch-day guarantee for an individual customer review.
2. Choose an appropriate destination for the early response
Goodreads and other reading platforms
Goodreads has published pre-publication review guidance covering reading confirmation and information about the advance-copy source. Ask readers to follow the current on-screen process and identify the correct book. A "Want to Read" action is not evidence of reading.
Do not ask someone to rate a book they have not read. A reader who stopped can describe their actual experience where the destination's rules allow. Never turn a wishlist or preorder into a ready-made endorsement.
Private feedback
If your objective is to check whether the presentation and contents match, ask a focused question privately. "Did the opening deliver the kind of mystery the description suggested?" is more useful than asking for a favorable sentence you can paste into an ad.
Keep private feedback private unless the reader separately authorizes a particular public use. A reply to an ARC email is not automatically a testimonial.
Editorial coverage
A reviewer, publication or professional assessment service may have its own lead time and terms. Verify whether the output is private assessment, editorial coverage, a licensed quotation or another defined service. Clearly distinguish any paid assessment from independent customer reviewing.
3. Plan backward from a usable book and a credible date
Finish the near-final reading copy, test delivery and give suitable readers enough time for the actual length. For recruitment, use the ARC reader guide. For statuses and communications, use the ARC-team process.
| Stage | What to prepare | What can be verified |
|---|---|---|
| Before inviting readers | Final-enough file, description, formats and honest publication plan | The reading material and access path work |
| Several weeks before release | Voluntary invitations and copy delivery | Acceptance and delivery, not completion |
| During early reading | Access support and limited agreed updates | Problems and responses readers choose to report |
| When a public destination permits | Accurate book link and destination guidance | Actual availability, without guaranteeing acceptance |
| After release | A factual update and campaign closure | Published status and any public reviews actually visible |
If release moves, update the communication schedule. Do not keep sending reminders with an old date or demand faster reading to compensate for a late file. Leave room for readers to decline and for the platform's own processing.
4. Ask for independent reading, not an assigned endorsement
Explain what is available now and what remains conditional. On Amazon, free or discounted book copies cannot require a review or influence its content; other benefits such as gift cards invalidate the review under KDP's customer review guidance. Do not reimburse purchases to obtain a verified-looking review.
A useful early-reading invitation
"An advance copy of [title] is available in [format]. The planned release is [date]. You can read it early if it suits your interests and schedule. There is no requirement to publish a review. If you choose to share your experience, please use a destination that permits it and identify the copy source as appropriate."
A factual post-release update
"[Title] is now available here: [verified edition link]. Thank you for considering the advance copy. Any public review is your choice and should reflect your own reading experience and the destination's rules. If reviewing is unavailable or you prefer not to participate, no action is needed."
Do not supply a review for the reader to paste. Do not ask for a rating floor, require author approval or redirect only unhappy readers into private contact. Private support can coexist with independent public opinion.
5. Treat disclosure and quotation permission separately
A reader should clearly explain a relevant advance-copy connection where required by the destination and applicable rules. For US-facing endorsements, consult FTC guidance. A plain statement such as "I received an advance copy from the author" identifies a source; it does not guarantee compliance for every relationship or platform.
If you want to use a reader's words in marketing
- Ask permission for the exact excerpt and intended use.
- Preserve the meaning and do not edit a mixed opinion into unqualified praise.
- Use the agreed attribution; do not invent a publication, credential or identity.
- Identify relevant connections or paid editorial arrangements appropriately.
- Check the destination's rules before adding a quotation to a listing or asset.
A public review's existence is not a blanket license for every advertising use. If permission is unclear, use your own accurate description rather than an unapproved testimonial.
6. Handle absent, delayed or blocked reviews honestly
| What happened | Reasonable action | Do not do |
|---|---|---|
| Reader has not finished | Respect the reading pace and optional participation | Demand a rating before reading |
| Review function unavailable | Check status and let the reader follow platform support if needed | Use another account or a manufactured purchase |
| Review submitted but not visible | Distinguish submission from publication and allow platform processing | Promise a display time you do not control |
| Critical review appears | Accept opinion; investigate actual content issues privately | Pressure the reader to revise or remove it |
| Edition or book link is wrong | Correct the information through the proper platform process | Ask the reader to post under an unrelated title |
Missing reviews do not prove misconduct by a reader. Review eligibility, moderation, timing and the reader's own choice can all matter. Do not use escalating reminders as a substitute for understanding which issue actually occurred.
7. Keep the launch viable without a review target
Prepare a clear cover, accurate description, useful sample and working buying link. These remain important if no public review appears on release day. A campaign should not collapse because an independent person or platform did not produce a promised-looking number.
- The advance copy is usable and its version is identified.
- Readers know participation and public reviewing are optional.
- Each public link matches the actual book, edition and status.
- The schedule distinguishes reading, submission and visible publication.
- Any quotation has an appropriate permission and attribution record.
- Follow-ups stop at withdrawal or campaign closure.
8. Measure the outcomes without merging them
Keep copies sent, useful private responses, public reviews by destination and retailer orders in separate records. Do not count a Goodreads review as an Amazon review or a downloaded file as a finished reading. Record the actual observation date for anything public.
Connect the plan to your launch checklist and campaign strategy. The useful pre-launch achievement is a ready book, informed early readers and accurate publication expectations, not a guaranteed set of reviews on a date you cannot control.
